Abstract

Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) production plays a significant role in rural livelihoods and employment in Afghanistan. However, limited empirical evidence exists on the combined production, infrastructural, and marketing constraints affecting grape value chains at the district level. This study aimed to identify and prioritize the major production, infrastructural, and marketing constraints affecting grape farmers and traders in the Guldara and Mir Bacha Kot districts of Kabul Province. The study collected primary data from 150 respondents, including 110 farmers and 40 traders, using structured questionnaires. The Garrett Ranking Technique was employed to identify and rank key constraints. The findings indicate that inadequate transportation infrastructure, water scarcity, pest and disease incidence, poor post-harvest handling, unreliable electricity supply, and price fluctuations were the principal factors limiting productivity and profitability. Educational differences between farmers and traders further highlight the need for targeted capacity-building programs. The study recommends integrated policy and investment measures to improve productivity, market efficiency, and the grape sector's overall competitiveness.
